The Dreaded Blank Canvas

Nov 11, 2024

As creatives, we often face the intimidating “blank canvas” at the start of a project. The key to shifting into “capable mode” for me is a structured process that taps into my creative flow. Here’s how I unlock my capability and move forward confidently:

  1. Commit to Focused Time: After fully understanding the project’s goals and audience, I set aside a pre-determined block of uninterrupted time. Even just 15 minutes can make a difference.
  2. Clear Mental Clutter: I jot down any unrelated thoughts or tasks that might distract me, then move that list away from my immediate vision. This lets me stay focused.
  3. Set the Scene: I put in noise-canceling earbuds with no-lyric music at a very low volume. The right environment helps me shift into a focused, creative space.
  4. Start Simple: I open a blank file in InDesign (or grab a piece of paper) and begin drawing anything—lines, words, shapes. This marks the shift from a blank canvas to a space filled with possibility.
  5. Let the Ideas Flow: Once the initial marks are made, my mind transitions from non-descriptive to usable, realized imagery. I can see how the design will unfold.

It’s all about removing mental blocks, trusting the process, and allowing space for creativity to breathe. You’re more capable than you realize once you get started!
